AN HOUR later, freshly showered, dressed in warm sweats, and fortified with hot coffee and a shot of whiskey, Pete felt that he might be on the edge of feeling less like an ice cream bar and more like a human. He joined Will and Luc in the living room.

“Zeb took a quick look at the brakes. Looks like you were right. He’ll know more tomorrow, but he thinks they were cut.”

“Cut and not punctured. Same guy, but in a hurry? Or a different person?” Pete asked.

“No way of knowing,” Will said.

Luc looked from one to the other. “You want to tell me what’s going on?”

“Cameron’s boyfriend was killed in a car accident last summer. When we checked into it, we found that his brakes had been tampered with. But they weren’t cut, just punctured.”

“And you think it might be the same person?”

Pete crossed his arms and tilted his head. “I wouldn’t be surprised. What bothers me is who knew I was going to be at Cam’s place tonight? Is he being watched? If so, from where? And by whom?” Pete rose and paced the room, attempting to ignore the pain in his leg and the worry showing on Luc’s face.

“Answer those questions and we’ll have our murderer,” Will said. His cell phone rang, and he moved to one side of the room to answer it. A moment later, he returned. “That was my liaison at the state police. I’m going to meet with him concerning this… incident. They have resources we don’t to look deeper into it.”

“Is that really necessary?” Pete asked.

“Yes,” Luc said before Will could answer. He rose and stomped over to Pete. “This has gone far enough. Will, you bring in anyone you need, no matter what Pete says.”

“Luc—”

“Don’t!” Luc held his hand up to Pete. “Don’t you dare argue. Will, go.”

Will nodded and left. As he did, Pete flopped back onto the sofa, dropping his head into his hands. After a moment, he sat back up. Luc sat next to him and gripped Pete’s arm.

“Pete, we’ve gotten too many calls too many times. Though it pains me to say it, I really don’t want to lose you. Especially while you’re here under my watch. Mama would never forgive me.”

Pete snorted but then grinned at his brother. “Yeah, she wouldn’t be happy with you.”

“She would make my life hell, and you know it.” He moved away from Pete. “Let Will do his job. You’re supposed to be relaxing, so relax.”

“Not as easy as you think.”

“I’m sure. But for tonight, please… try. For me. If not for me, then for that man of yours. I think once he hears about this little incident, he won’t be any happier than Mama.”

“You wouldn’t…. Don’t tell him. Please.”

Luc put on an innocent face. “I won’t. But… remember, this is a small town. You think it won’t be all over the place by morning? Hah. I’ll bet half the population already knows.”

“Damn.”

“Yeah. Now get some rest.” Luc patted his shoulder and headed for his room.
